Police Personnel and Finance

Police personnel traditionally comprise attorneys (members of the legal profession), the regular police force, clerical staff and ancillary staff (maintenance etc). Over the last few years, people from other occupational groups have also been employed. They include psychologists, photographers, economists, IT-experts and communications advisers.

Attorneys

Attorneys are appointed under the authority of the Ministry of Justice and may serve in the National Commissioner’s Office as well as the Prosecution Service and the police districts.

Clerical Staff

Clerical staff work in the police districts and in the different departments of the National Commissioner’s Office. Their responsibilities include records and registration, finance and accountancy as well as a number of public-directed services such as the issue of passports, driving licences and number plates and the collection of fines.

Ancillary Staff

The ancillary staff perform practical tasks in the police districts, such as conveying internal post, maintenance of motor vehicles and general caretaker functions in and around police stations. There are also a number of skilled craftsmen who carry out certain practical tasks.

Working Environment

Consultants (psychologists, therapists etc) are linked to the police with a view to improving the psychological and physical working environment.

Finance

The financial framework of the police has for many years been based on multi-year agreements. The parties of the Folketing have entered into political agreements on the financial situation of the police for 3 – 4 years at a time. These agreements have brought order to the finances and formed the basis for long-term targeted financial planning of the development in various important police areas, including in particular investment areas such as the IT area. In connection with the most recent multi-year agreement covering the period 2004 – 2006, the financial framework of the police has been fixed at approximately DKK 7 billion per year.
